Called to Serve: Message for Fifth Sunday after Epiphany 2012

February 05, 2012 Sermons by James Ravenscroft Edit

The healing by Jesus of Simon's mother-in-law and her immeditately getting up to serve reminds us that we are raised up like her not for ourselves but to reach out in care. Paul's approach to proclaiming the gospel with respect to their own culture and perspective is another way of reaching out in service. We are reminded that Jesus came for the world and not just an in-group and so as his followers we need to stop expecting people t come to the gospel but rahter to bring the gospel to people. As we do this we listen and get to know our neighbours so we can serve as we ought and not as we think they need. Read more at sermon.120205.pdf. To comment click on this week's message title.

A Different Kind of Authority: Message for Fourth Sunday after Epiphany 2012

January 29, 2012 Sermons by James Ravenscroft Edit

As a culture we tend to both respect and be suspicious of authority. We know we need authority but misused authority makes us wary. Jesus invites us to exercise authority differently, not elite based but honouring the needs of many people. Like Jesus, we need to ground our relationships in God's authority. Sharing God's Hope: Message for Baptism of Jesus Sunday 2012

January 08, 2012 Sermons by James Ravenscroft Edit

Baptism of Jesus Sunday acts as a bridge between Christmas and the Season of Epiphany. We reflect as we do in Christmas on who Jesus is and what his mission was to be, and we reflect as we do after Epiphany on how he calls us to continue his mission in the world. The baptism of Jesus as Mark tells it is a Christmas story. We learn that Jesus is set apart as God's anointed servant. But at the end of the story Jesus comes back to Galilee and invites others to share in his ministry. He continues to call us to share God's hope. Read more at sermon.120108.pdf. Walk of Faith: Message for New Year's Day 2012

January 01, 2012 Sermons by James Ravenscroft Edit

Last year, Glen and I went to Los Angeles to go to Disneyland. Part of our trip was a tour of LA during which we saw the "Walk of Fame". People are placed on the walk because they are exceptional in their area of the entertainment industry. In our own lives as followers of Jesus, we also are called to be exceptional in the way we live up to Jesus' name and take on his mission in the world. Read more at sermon.120101.pdf.
