Inside Out Session 2

October 14, 2011 Study Group by Nancy Chegus Edit

Week 2 and the discussion deepens as we continue to follow Marcus Borg's book, "Speaking Christian." If you are following along, we covered chapters 5 through 10.

Here's a question to ponder: If Jesus is the decisive revelation of the character and passion of God, as his followers have affirmed from the beginning, what does his life say about God?

Let us know what you think. To leave a comment click on the title "Inside Out" and then click on "add comment."

Inside Out - Book Discussion

October 07, 2011 Study Group by Nancy Chegus Edit

Welcome to the Inside Out. Our discussion group met for the first time last evening and we will gather for the next 4 Thursday evenings to discuss Marcus Borg's latest book, "Speaking Christian." This blog is an opportunity to extend the discussion and include those who are not able to attend. We look forward to hearing your comments. If you are following along with the book at home, we will cover about 5 chapters each week.

Session 1:

Starting Point - Being Christian means being able to speak and understand the Christian language. However, many are unfamiliar with Christian language and many more misinterpret its meaning. In this book, Marcus Borg takes us through some of this language and helps us understand the true biblical meaning of these words. It's refreshing and it makes sense with what we know in the world.

Question:

Let's start with the word "salvation." What does this word mean to you? Is it about going to heaven or is it about transformation?

Mountain Top Vistas: Message for Third Sunday of Covenants 2011

September 25, 2011 Sermons by Nancy Chegus Edit

Have you ever had a little moment at the top of a mountain where the definitions of earth and sky seem to blur and you feel at one with all that is sacred? As we begin the last week in September, this is a good day to stand on a mountain and take in the view - the big picture of what lies in store for this program year. There is something new being created on God's holy mountain, a path to justice and peace that will transform the world. We just have to believe we have the will to make it so.

Fear Factor: Message for 8th Sunday After Pentecost 2011

August 09, 2011 Sermons by Nancy Chegus Edit

The fear factor that plays on our minds and in the world can cause serious damage and can get in the way of our dreams. Joseph's brothers acted out of fear when they sold him off to the Ishmaelites. Peter allowed fear to sink his best efforts as he tried to walk toward Jesus on the water in the storm. Sometimes it seems that tackling our fears helps us learn about our faith. The challenge is to act from what we believe in and not what we are afraid of. Read more at sermon.110807.pdf

Coming Home: Message for 7th Sunday After Pentecost 2011

Being on the edge of returning home can provide an opportunity to reflect on where we have been, where we are going, and what we feel called to do. Perhaps such was the case for Jacob as he struggled with God on the banks of the Jabbok. For more about the struggle and blessing of returning home go to sermon.110731.pdf
