What's in a Name?: Message for 10th Sunday after Pentecost 2011

"What's in a name?" Juliet asks. As evident by the tragic ending of Shakespeare's tale, the answer is everything. Names shape our identitiy, give us a sense of self-understanding and belonging. The dynamic of naming and identity runs through the story of Moses' origin and the account of Jesus asking who people say he is. In the end, our identity is an initial gift that we in turn nuance and shape. In the end we name ourselves, including how we understand God and Jesus.
