Lighting the Path: Message for Fourth Sunday in Lent 2011

April 03, 2011 Sermons by James Ravenscroft Edit
The story of Jesus healing the man who was blind from birth is not just a story of coming to see or experiencing light but also of a willingness to share light with others. That's what we're called to do. We do this by being lamplighters, kindling the light in others and by shining light on where God is at work, often in places where we claim God couldn't possibly be. Love the description of the United Church as mentoring as opposed to being dogmatic - lighting a lamp rather than shining a spotlight in someone's eyes. I've always felt uncomfortable with witnessing or evangelazing - however put in the concept of mentoring, of showing the way through our lifestyle and values, is something I feel very comfortable with. (Don't let my high school english teacher see that last sentence.) Good sermon, sorry I couldn't hear it in the context of the readings - I had to dig out a copy of the Lamplighter.

Thanks Wayne. Evangelism is not something we do very well as United Church. We sometimes confuse showing respect to another person's viewpoint with being silent about our own. We should be able to share what motivates us spiritually, what gives our lvies meaning without suggesting our viewpoint trumps another's.

This was a beautiful sermon. I feel as though your description of light guiding us has given me the inspiration to go forward and share with my friend and family just how much light they have given me, as well as what I intern can do for them as well as for others. You have great energy as well, always do. Thank you for reminding me what else is important. I believe I needed a little reminder.
